Tories would reverse ‘NHS preferred provider’ policy

The Conservatives would reverse Labour’s ‘NHS preferred provider’ policy to open up services to competition from all sectors, shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley told charity leaders.
He said that the third sector would move ‘from the margins to the heart of our health and social care services’, including by requiring public health commissioners to procure an increasing proportion of their services from the third and private sectors.
Stephen Bubb, chief executive officer of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations, said: ‘We know that the third sector can provide health services that result in better outcomes for service users and lower costs for the public purse. We need now to ensure that NHS commissioners have the confidence and the competencies to engage that potential.’
